Remotely Monitoring Water Table Dipwells with Northumberland Peat Project

DLN Soil Monitors have now been mounted in dipwells so that the water table can be remotely monitored in real time using satellite connectivity instead of manual datalogging. The photo above shows a unit and a rain gauge that were installed in a Northumberland bog undergoing peat restoration as part of a project by the Northumberland Peat Partnership to improve carbon capture. 

The addition of a rain gauge allows the customer to see how the water table changes in relation to rain fall. In the dashboard below, you can see how the rain fall (right axis and grey bars) affects the water table level (left axis and blue line).

In the distance of the photo below you can see the lines of “grips” that were cut in times gone by to drain the bog. The damage from these is being reversed as the project progresses.
